| WHAT'S
HAPPENING AT THE NURSERY |
Six
weeks of devastating winter weather left us looking very, very
sad for quite some time. Five frosts - one night the temperatures
were down in the low 20's!
It certainly revealed, however, which plants happily survive
those extremes of temperatures.
From freezing weather, we are now experiencing record highs
so everything is bursting to life at a very rapid pace. Tip
pruning of some of the frost sensitive material is complete
and everything is budding out. Most of the perennials are flowering
or on the cusp of blooming.
Tampa Vervain (this survived and bloomed throughout the winter),
looking bright and fresh; Red, White and Pink Salvia are attracting
the hungry bees and butterflies. Milkweed, Blanket flower, Tickseed,
Black-eyed Susan, and white and yellow Beach Buttercup are all
showing off their spring regalia.
Yellow Jessamine (the first native to flower in spring) has
just finished blooming but the Dwarf Walters Viburnum (Ms Schillers
Delight) is a perfect picture of white blossoms. Cross Vine
and Coral Honeysuckle are in full bloom and awaiting the first
of our Hummingbird's new family.
During the winter we cleared and subsequently created a number
of new landscaped demonstration areas. A Hummingbird garden;
Wildlife
habitat area and enlarged the Butterfly garden. Many more trees
have been planted around the Nursery to provide shade and habitat
for wildlife.
For the human element, we have enlarged the sitting area for
our classes and redecorated the office and created a sitting
area in the front office for customers who wish to discuss landscape
plans, etc. The back office will now house our new computer
and eventually new accounting system. Our Web-site is still
being constructed but hopefully we shall be on line within the
next couple of months.
Don't forget, for your convenience, we now also take Credit
Cards, MasterCard, Visa and Discover.
