Alternatives to High Maintenance Exotics |
Dwarf
Walters Viburnum (densa) grows to 4-5ft with small clusters
of white flowers in spring. Dense evergreen lush growth habit
requiring no pruning.
An excellent alternative to Pittosporum (too many diseases to
name!), &Viburnum (Sweet & Sandakwa), which is erroneously
planted under windows and becomes a pruning nightmare.
Dwarf Firebush prefers
partial shade to full sun - blooms year round - hummingbird
attractor -needs pruning once a year. Maximum height 4-5ft.
Use as alternative to Ixora and Azaleas both of which are subject
to diseases and bugs and require an acid soil which is almost
non existent in this area.
Coontie and Dwarf Yaupon Holly
-hardy evergreen as alternatives to Juniper which has a very
limited life expectancy due to susceptibility to fungus blight
etc. Coontie, our only native cycad, deep green open fan shaped
fronds. Dwarf Yaupon Holly with dense grey/green leaves-new
leaves reddish tips.
Both are slow growing and need no pruning. Coontie can also
be used instead of that extremely boring overused exotic Liriope
or Aztec grass.
Dwarf Golden Dewdrop or Dwarf
Firebush can be used as alternatives to Copperleaf &
Thryallis both of which are susceptible to overpruning and windy
weather. Both of these natives flower and need little pruning
and no fertilizer.
Walter's Viburnum: Simpson
Stopper: Yaupon Holly all slow growing alternatives to
Viburnum varieties (mentioned above). All can be used as privacy
barriers and do not need pruning. They also have the added attribute
of attracting wildlife as they produce berries and flowers.
